1. Causes

Head pain, or headache, is caused by irritation or dysfunction in the structures surrounding the brain and cervical spine. These include blood vessels, muscles, nerves, and connective tissues. Headaches can also result from brain chemical imbalances or central sensitization.

2. Underlying Factors

– Tension-type headaches: Caused by stress, anxiety, or prolonged neck/shoulder tension
– Migraine: Triggered by hormonal shifts, certain foods, sensory stimuli, or poor sleep
– Cervicogenic headaches: Resulting from neck joint or muscle issues
– Poor posture from prolonged screen use
– Eyestrain, dehydration, or skipping meals
– Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction or jaw clenching

3. Symptoms

– Dull, pressing or squeezing pain on both sides of the head (tension-type)
– Pulsating pain often on one side of the head (migraine)
– Neck stiffness or pain radiating to the head (cervicogenic)
– Sensitivity to light, sound, or smell
– Nausea, visual aura, or dizziness in migraines
– Difficulty concentrating or fatigue

4. Treatment Options

– Acupuncture: Regulates neurological pathways and reduces inflammation
– Manual therapy: Focused massage and myofascial release for neck and scalp tension
