Shingles Pain
Auckland Pain Management Clinic

1. Causes

Shingles pain, also known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. It affects the nerves and skin, leading to severe nerve pain even after the skin rash heals. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), shingles pain is linked to liver fire, damp-heat, toxin accumulation, and Qi stagnation obstructing the meridians.

2. Underlying Factors

– Reactivation of dormant varicella-zoster virus in the nervous system
– Weakened immunity due to aging, illness, or stress
– Inflammatory damage to peripheral nerves
– Delayed antiviral treatment during acute phase
– Emotional stress or lack of rest aggravating nerve inflammation
– Liver or kidney Yin deficiency weakening defensive Qi

3. Symptoms

– Burning, stabbing, or electric-shock-like pain along one side of the body
– Pain localized to areas previously affected by shingles rash
– Sensitivity to touch, even from clothing or a breeze
– Persistent itching, tingling, or numbness in the affected region
– Pain lasting for months or years after skin lesions resolve
– Sleep disturbance, mood changes, or decreased quality of life

4. Treatment Options

– Acupuncture: Relieves nerve pain, clears residual heat, and restores meridian flow
– Herbal medicine: Clears heat and dampness, nourishes Yin, and soothes the liver
– Manual therapy: Gentle techniques to ease tension around affected dermatomes
– Low-level laser therapy or cupping (avoiding broken skin) for neuralgia

5. At-Home Tips

– Keep the affected area clean, dry, and protected from wind or irritation
– Apply a warm compress for temporary pain relief
– Use loose, soft clothing to avoid aggravating skin sensitivity
– Avoid spicy or greasy foods during recovery
– Practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation or gentle breathing
– Recommended products: nerve-soothing herbal patches, moxa rolls, pain-relief balms, silk undergarments
